What Is Xanthi Known For?

Xanthi earned the nickname Little Paris during its wealthiest era, and the mansions built by tobacco merchants still stand as proof of just how much money once passed through this corner of Thrace.

Xanthi is known first for its Old Town, a protected settlement since 1976 that preserves Ottoman and neoclassical architecture built largely from tobacco wealth in the 18th and 19th centuries. A complex of 57 tobacco warehouses survives in the southern part of the city, standing as a direct link to the industry that once carried Xanthi's reputation across Europe and earned it that Little Paris comparison for its elegance and prosperity at the time.

The city is equally known for its Carnival, running annually since 1966 and ranking among the largest pre-Lenten celebrations in southeastern Europe. Cultural clubs across the region spend months preparing costumes and floats for the parade, and the event draws visitors from across the Balkans, particularly from neighboring countries whose own carnival traditions run parallel to Greece's.

Xanthi's multicultural character sits at the center of its identity too, shaped by a population that includes Greek, Muslim, and Pontic communities living within a compact city between the Rhodope Mountains and the Aegean coast. That mix shows up directly in the Saturday bazaar, still running after centuries, and in the city's food, architecture, and everyday street life.

The region also claims a notable list of birthplaces, including the ancient philosophers Democritus and Protagoras, along with composer Manos Hadjidakis, whose legacy gets its own annual tribute each autumn. Just outside the city, the Livaditis waterfall, at roughly 60 meters, ranks as the tallest in the Balkans, giving Xanthi a natural landmark to match its layered urban history, all within reach of Kavala and Komotini for anyone touring the wider region.
