Where Should I Stay in Ioannina?

Ioannina comes down to three real options, and the choice mostly depends on whether history, lake views, or everyday convenience matters most.

Ioannina's Old Town, known as Kastro, sits inside the walls of the oldest continuously inhabited Byzantine fortress in Greece, and staying here means waking up among Ottoman-era architecture, cobbled streets, and Ali Pasha's tomb rather than a modern hotel district. It suits travelers who want the city's layered history built directly into the stay, though parking inside the walls can be tricky and most hotels here arrange it separately.

The lakefront, along Lake Pamvotida just outside the old walls, gives a quieter base with direct access to the boat crossing to the island in the middle of the lake, and its cafes and views make it a strong choice for anyone who wants scenery without giving up walking distance to the Old Town.

The modern city center, around Pyrrus Square, holds the widest range of shops, restaurants, and everyday conveniences, and it suits travelers who'd rather stay somewhere more contemporary while still being close enough to reach the castle and the lake on foot.

Once a base is decided, hotels and places to stay in Ioannina cover all three areas, and booking two to three months ahead matters for peak summer and holiday periods given how quickly rooms in the Old Town and along the lake fill up.

The Old Town suits travelers prioritizing history and atmosphere, the lakefront suits anyone wanting views and easy access to the island, and the modern city center suits those who want convenience and a wider range of restaurants and shops within walking distance of everything else.
