Where Should I Stay on Kefalonia?

Kefalonia splits across five real bases, and given the island's size, the choice comes down mostly to which part of it matters most for the trip.

Kefalonia's Argostoli, the capital, gives the most convenient base for first-time visitors, with museums, restaurants, and the main ferry and bus hub all close together, plus loggerhead turtles regularly spotted in the Koutavos lagoon. It suits travelers without a car who want central logistics and a wide range of accommodation.

Lassi, just south of Argostoli, pairs beach access with easy day trips, its long stretches of sand backed by resorts and restaurants within walking distance of the airport. It suits families and couples wanting sunsets over the water without straying far from the capital.

Skala, on the southeast coast, centers the stay directly on a long sandy beach, and it suits families wanting shallow water and a relaxed pace close to the sand.

Fiskardo, at the island's northern tip, is the only village to survive the 1953 earthquake with its Venetian architecture intact, and it suits couples wanting an upscale, romantic base built around sailing and harbor dining, though the drive from the south takes nearly two hours.

Sami, on the east coast, gives the best access to the Melissani and Drogarati caves and Antisamos Beach, suiting travelers prioritizing nature over nightlife, and it also serves as the main ferry port to Ithaca.

Once a base is decided, hotels and places to stay on Kefalonia span Argostoli, Lassi, Skala, Fiskardo, and Sami, so the choice comes down to convenience, beach access, romance, or nature.

Kefalonia has its own airport, and travelers connecting to Ithaca by ferry should check ferry schedules and book tickets ahead of a summer visit. Argostoli suits most first-timers, Lassi suits families and day-trippers, Skala suits beach-focused families, Fiskardo suits couples, and Sami suits nature-focused travelers.
