Getting from Agathonisi to Elafonisos

If you are heading to Elafonisos from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to a small island off the southern Peloponnese coast. The two are on opposite sides of Greece and the journey requires going through Athens.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agathonisi to Elafonisos. The only way to reach Elafonisos is by the short local ferry from Pounta, a small port on the southern tip of the Peloponnese around 4.5 to 5 hours by road from Athens. Getting to Pounta from Agathonisi means taking the local ferry to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then driving south through the Peloponnese via Corinth, Tripoli and Sparta. The trip from Pounta to Elafonisos takes around 10 minutes and runs every 30 minutes in summer.

Getting there by air

Elafonisos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then driving to Pounta gives a total journey time of around 8 to 9 hours.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, fly to Athens and drive to Pounta for the short ferry across to Elafonisos. Having a car on arrival gives you the flexibility to explore the island and the surrounding Laconian coast. Give yourself at least a full day of travel and plan your Pounta arrival around the ferry schedule.
