Getting from Agathonisi to Heraklion

If you are heading to Heraklion from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to the capital of Crete, with the Palace of Knossos just 5 kilometres from the city centre and one of the finest archaeological museums in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agathonisi to Heraklion. The most practical ferry approach is to take the direct ferry from Agathonisi to Rhodes, which takes around 6 to 8 hours, and then connect to Heraklion by the overnight ferry from Rhodes, which takes around 9 to 12 hours. The total journey by sea takes the better part of two days but keeps you within the Aegean ferry network.

Getting there by air

Heraklion has an international airport. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Heraklion, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos and fly to Heraklion via Athens. It is the most practical approach. If you are travelling with a car, take the ferry from Agathonisi to Rhodes and board the overnight ferry from Rhodes to Heraklion, which takes your vehicle directly to Crete.
