Getting from Agathonisi to Kavala

If you are heading to Kavala from Agathonisi you are making your way from the northern Dodecanese group to a port city in northern Greece on the Macedonian coast. It has a Byzantine castle above the harbour, a Roman aqueduct running through the upper town and the archaeological site of Philippi just 15 kilometres inland.

There is no direct ferry from Agathonisi to Kavala. Getting there by sea means taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Samos and then connecting via the wider Aegean ferry network to Kavala, which involves multiple stops and takes the better part of two days. Flying is the only realistic option for most travellers.

Getting there by air

Kavala has an airport with connections from Athens. Taking the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Kavala, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the local ferry from Agathonisi to Leros or Samos and fly to Kavala via Athens. It is the only realistic approach. Kavala Airport is around 30 kilometres from the city so factor in a taxi on arrival. If you are planning to visit Thassos from Kavala, the ferry runs almost hourly in summer and the trip takes around 1 hour 20 minutes.
