Getting from Agios Efstratios to Kastellorizo

If you are heading to Kastellorizo from Agios Efstratios you are making one of the longer journeys in the Greek island world, from one of the most isolated islands in the northern Aegean to the easternmost point of Greece, a tiny island just off the Turkish coast with a harbour of neoclassical mansions, the extraordinary Blue Cave and an atmosphere of complete tranquility.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Agios Efstratios to Kastellorizo. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there by sea means taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then boarding the Piraeus to Kastellorizo ferry, which runs 6 times a week and takes around 20 to 21 hours stopping at multiple Dodecanese islands along the way. The total journey takes the better part of three days.

Getting there by air

Kastellorizo has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Taking the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Rhodes and Rhodes to Kastellorizo gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Agios Efstratios to Lemnos, fly to Athens and then fly to Rhodes and connect to Kastellorizo by air or local ferry. The Rhodes to Kastellorizo ferry takes around 2.5 to 5 hours and runs weekly year-round. Give yourself at least two nights on Kastellorizo. The island is small enough to walk around in an afternoon and extraordinary enough to make you want to stay much longer.
