Getting from Alexandroupoli to Astakos

If you are heading to Astakos from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to a port town on the western coast of central Greece, on the opposite side of the country. Astakos sits on a quiet bay surrounded by hills and is the departure point for ferries to Kefalonia and Ithaca.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry connection between Alexandroupoli and Astakos. Astakos is a small mainland port with no connection to the northeastern Aegean ferry network. Getting there means traveling entirely by road or a combination of road and air across Greece.

Getting there by air

Astakos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Athens and then driving or taking the KTEL bus to Astakos, which takes around 3.5 to 4 hours from Athens via the E65 motorway and Agrinio, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours.

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Athens and drive or take the KTEL bus to Astakos. It is the most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Alexandroupoli to Astakos via the Egnatia motorway, E75 and then west through Ioannina and Agrinio, which takes around 7 to 8 hours in total.
