Getting from Alexandroupoli to Santorini

If you are heading to Santorini from Alexandroupoli you are making your way from the far northeastern corner of Greece to the most iconic island in the country, on the opposite side of the Aegean. It has caldera views, volcanic beaches and the ancient Minoan site of Akrotiri preserved under volcanic ash.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alexandroupoli to Santorini. Alexandroupoli's ferry connections are limited to Samothrace, Lemnos, Agios Efstratios and Lavrio. Getting to Santorini by sea means flying to Athens first and then taking the Piraeus to Santorini ferry, which runs up to 9 daily departures in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours depending on the vessel.

Getting there by air

Santorini has an international airport with daily connections from Athens and Thessaloniki. Flying from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki and then Thessaloniki to Santorini avoids Athens entirely and gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours in summer when direct services operate. Otherwise fly via Athens for a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours.

Your best option

Fly from Alexandroupoli to Thessaloniki and then fly directly to Santorini when the seasonal service is running. Outside summer, fly via Athens. Book well ahead in July and August as Santorini flight spaces fill up fast. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Alexandroupoli to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Santorini ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to Athinios port.
