Getting from Alonissos to Ioannina

If you are heading to Ioannina from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to a city in the mountains of Epirus in northwestern Greece, on the western shore of Lake Pamvotis with the Pindos range behind it and the Vikos Gorge, one of the deepest in the world, an hour away.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry to Ioannina. It is an inland city with no sea connection. Getting there from Alonissos means taking the ferry to Skiathos or Volos and then traveling by road or air to Ioannina.

Getting there by air

Both Ioannina and Skiathos have airports. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Athens, then Athens to Ioannina gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. The KTEL bus from Volos to Ioannina via Trikala and the Pindos mountains takes around 4 to 5 hours and is a good option if you prefer to travel by road and have the scenery reward the effort.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly to Ioannina via Athens. It is the most time efficient approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive northwest to Ioannina via the E65 motorway, which takes around 4 to 5 hours from Volos.
