Getting from Alonissos to Kastellorizo

If you are heading to Kastellorizo from Alonissos you are making one of the longer journeys in the Greek island world, from the most remote of the Sporades group to the easternmost point of Greece, a tiny island just off the Turkish coast with a harbour of neoclassical mansions, the extraordinary Blue Cave and an atmosphere of complete tranquility.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Kastellorizo. The two islands are in completely different parts of Greece with no sea connection between them. Getting there by sea means taking the ferry from Alonissos to Volos, driving to Piraeus and boarding the Piraeus to Kastellorizo ferry, which runs 6 times a week and takes around 20 to 22 hours stopping at multiple Dodecanese islands along the way. The total journey takes the better part of three days.

Getting there by air

Kastellorizo has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, flying to Athens and then Athens to Rhodes and Rhodes to Kastellorizo gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos, fly to Athens and then fly to Rhodes and connect to Kastellorizo by air or local ferry. Give yourself at least two nights on Kastellorizo. The island is small enough to walk around in an afternoon and extraordinary enough to make you want to stay much longer.
