Getting from Alonissos to Skyros

If you are heading to Skyros from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to its most remote member, in the northern Aegean. It has two completely different landscapes, a dramatic hilltop Chora and a wild volcanic south, with its own native horse breed and one of the most extraordinary carnival traditions in Greece.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Alonissos to Skyros. Skyros is connected to the mainland only via Kymi on the eastern coast of Evia, with the crossing taking around 1 hour 40 minutes and running 2 to 3 times daily. Getting there from Alonissos means taking the ferry to Mantoudi in northern Evia, which is around 45 kilometres from Kymi, and then driving south to Kymi for the ferry across to Skyros. This is the most direct sea and road combination and keeps the journey away from Athens.

Getting there by air

Skyros has its own small airport with connections from Athens, running around twice a week. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying to Athens, then Athens to Skyros gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. Check the Athens to Skyros schedule carefully as the service runs a limited number of times per week. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Mantoudi and drive south to Kymi for the ferry across to Skyros. It is the most direct approach and avoids Athens entirely. If you are traveling with a car, this route puts you on Skyros with your vehicle ready to explore both ends of the island.
