Getting from Alonissos to Thessaloniki

If you are heading to Thessaloniki from Alonissos you are making your way from the most remote of the Sporades group to the second largest city in Greece, in the north of the country. It has a waterfront that stretches for kilometres past the White Tower, exceptional food and a history shaped by Byzantine, Ottoman and modern Greek influences.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Alonissos to Thessaloniki running in summer, which is one of the more convenient connections from the island to the north. The journey takes around 4 to 5 hours. Check the schedule carefully as the service is not year-round and frequency varies. Alternatively, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive north to Thessaloniki via the E75 motorway, which takes around 2 hours from Volos.

Getting there by air

Thessaloniki has an international airport with connections from Athens and Skiathos. Alonissos has no airport. Taking the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and flying directly to Thessaloniki avoids Athens entirely and gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Alonissos to Skiathos and fly directly to Thessaloniki. It is the fastest and most practical approach and avoids Athens entirely. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Alonissos to Volos and drive north to Thessaloniki via the E75 motorway, which takes around 2 hours from Volos.
