Getting from Alonissos to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Alonissos you are making one of the most natural connections from the island, to the city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula that serves as the main mainland gateway to the Sporades. It has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Alonissos to Volos running daily in summer, taking around 3 to 5 hours depending on the vessel. The fast catamaran takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours and the conventional ferry takes around 4 to 5 hours. It is the most straightforward connection from Alonissos to the mainland and the most practical way to continue by road or rail from there.

Getting there by air

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with limited connections from Athens. Alonissos has no airport. The ferry is the most practical option for this connection.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry from Alonissos to Volos. It is the most natural and practical connection from the island to the mainland. From Volos you can drive or take the KTEL bus to Athens in around 3 to 3.5 hours, or drive north to Thessaloniki in around 2 hours. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry takes your vehicle directly to Volos port.
