Getting from Anafi to Kythira

If you are heading to Kythira from Anafi you are making your way from one of the most remote islands in the Cyclades to an island at the southern tip of the Peloponnese, between the Aegean and the Ionian seas. The two are in completely different parts of Greece and there is no direct sea connection between them.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Anafi to Kythira. Anafi's main connection is to Santorini, which takes around 1 to 2 hours and runs 1 to 2 times daily in summer. From Santorini the practical approach is to fly to Athens and then either fly to Kythira or take the ferry from Piraeus to Kythira, which runs several times a week and takes around 7 hours. Alternatively, fly to Athens and drive to Neapoli on the southern Peloponnese for the short ferry to Kythira, which takes around 1 hour 15 minutes and runs daily.

Getting there by air

Kythira has its own small airport with daily connections from Athens. Anafi has no airport. The nearest airport is Santorini. Taking the ferry from Anafi to Santorini and then flying to Athens and then Athens to Kythira gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Anafi to Santorini and then fly to Athens and fly to Kythira. It is the most practical approach. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Anafi to Santorini, fly to Athens, drive to Neapoli and take the short ferry across to Kythira from there, which avoids the longer Piraeus crossing entirely.
