Getting from Antikythera to Chania

If you are heading to Chania from Antikythera you are making one of the most natural connections from the island, to the most intimate of Crete's three main cities just a short ferry ride to the south. It has a Venetian old town of narrow lanes, a fortress above the sea and a long sandy beach running east from the town centre.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Antikythera to Kissamos in western Crete running year-round, taking around 2 hours. Kissamos is around 40 kilometres from Chania and the bus between them takes around 1 hour. This is the most practical and direct connection from Antikythera to the Chania area without going through Athens at all. The service runs several times a week so check the schedule carefully and build your travel dates around the available departures.

Getting there by air

Chania has an international airport with daily connections from Athens. Antikythera has no airport, only a helipad. Taking the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira, flying to Athens and then Athens to Chania takes around 50 minutes on the second leg. Total journey time is around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the direct ferry from Antikythera to Kissamos and then take the bus east to Chania. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural and practical connection from the island to Chania. If the ferry timing does not work, take the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira and fly to Chania via Athens. If you are traveling with a car, the direct ferry to Kissamos puts your vehicle in western Crete from where you can drive east to Chania.
