Getting from Antikythera to Piraeus

If you are heading to Piraeus from Antikythera you are making your way from one of the most remote islands in Greece to the largest port in the country and the gateway to Athens and the wider ferry network.

Take the ferry

There is a direct ferry from Antikythera to Piraeus running several times a week year-round, taking around 9 hours. It is the main sea connection from the island to the Athens area and is comfortable with seating and cabin options available. Check the schedule before planning around it as the frequency is limited and your travel dates need to align with the available departures. From Piraeus the metro takes around 20 minutes to central Athens.

Getting there by air

Piraeus has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens International, around 45 kilometres to the east. Antikythera has no airport, only a helipad. Taking the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira, flying to Athens and then taking the metro or taxi to Piraeus, which takes around 20 to 45 minutes from Athens Airport, gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours and is considerably faster than the direct ferry.

Your best option

Take the direct overnight ferry from Antikythera to Piraeus if you are not in a hurry or are traveling with a car. It is comfortable and delivers you directly to the port. If speed matters, take the ferry from Antikythera to Kythira and fly to Athens, then take the metro or taxi to Piraeus. If you are traveling with a car, the direct overnight ferry is the only realistic option as it takes your vehicle directly to the port.
