Getting from Astakos to Skopelos

If you are heading to Skopelos from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to an island in the Sporades, in the northern Aegean. It has a densely forested coastline, a Chora of white houses and slate roofs climbing steeply above the port and over 120 churches.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Skopelos. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Skopelos means driving from Astakos northeast to Volos or Mantoudi in northern Evia for the ferry to Skopelos. From Volos the crossing takes around 2 to 3 hours and from Mantoudi around 1.5 hours. The drive from Astakos to Volos takes around 3.5 to 4 hours via the E65 motorway, avoiding Athens entirely. Note that as of 2026 there are no departures from Agios Konstantinos to Skopelos.

Getting there by air

Skopelos has no airport. The nearest airport is Skiathos, with connections from Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Athens and flying to Skiathos, followed by the short ferry from Skiathos to Skopelos taking around 1 hour, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos northeast to Volos or Mantoudi and take the ferry across to Skopelos. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural and direct approach. If you prefer to fly, drive to Athens and fly to Skiathos then take the ferry across to Skopelos. If you are traveling with a car, the ferry from Volos or Mantoudi takes your vehicle directly to the island.
