Getting from Astakos to Tilos

If you are heading to Tilos from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to an island in the Dodecanese group, on the opposite side of the country. It is the first island in the Mediterranean to run entirely on renewable energy with good walking trails and a wild coastline.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Tilos. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Tilos means driving from Astakos to Athens, which takes around 3.5 hours, and then flying to Rhodes or Kos, followed by the local ferry to Tilos. From Rhodes the ferry takes around 2 to 3 hours and from Kos around 2 hours.

Getting there by air

Tilos has no airport. The nearest airports are Rhodes and Kos. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Athens and flying to Rhodes, then taking the local ferry from Rhodes to Tilos gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos to Athens and fly to Rhodes, then take the local ferry across to Tilos. Check the Rhodes to Tilos schedule before booking your flights as the service does not run daily. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Astakos to Athens and continue to Piraeus for the overnight Piraeus to Tilos ferry, which takes your vehicle.
