Getting from Astakos to Spetses

If you are heading to Spetses from Astakos you are making your way from a port town on the western coast of central Greece to a car-free island in the Saronic Gulf, on the opposite side of the country. It has neoclassical mansions around the harbour, a strong nautical tradition and a relaxed waterfront atmosphere.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astakos to Spetses. Astakos ferry connections are limited to Kefalonia and Ithaca. Getting to Spetses means driving from Astakos to Athens, which takes around 3.5 hours, and then taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Spetses, which runs up to 10 daily crossings and takes around 1.5 to 3.5 hours. Alternatively drive to the mainland port of Kosta on the Peloponnese, around 3 to 3.5 hours from Astakos via Patras and Corinth, and take the short local boat across to Spetses in around 10 minutes.

Getting there by air

Spetses has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Astakos has no airport either. Driving from Astakos to Athens and taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Spetses gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Drive from Astakos to Kosta on the Peloponnese and take the short local boat across to Spetses. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct approach. Note that Spetses is car-free so no vehicles can be taken to the island. If you are traveling with a car, leave it at Kosta and take the short boat across to Spetses from there.
