Getting from Astypalaia to Fournoi

If you are heading to Fournoi from Astypalaia you are making your way from a butterfly-shaped island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to a cluster of small fishing islands between Ikaria and Samos in the eastern Aegean, relatively close in regional terms. It has excellent seafood, quiet beaches and almost no tourist infrastructure.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Astypalaia to Fournoi running in summer on the wider Blue Star route that connects Astypalaia with the eastern Aegean. The service runs a limited number of times per week and takes several hours with stops along the way. Alternatively take the ferry from Astypalaia to Samos and then the local ferry to Fournoi, which takes under 1 hour and runs daily in summer. This avoids Athens entirely and keeps the journey within the eastern Aegean.

Getting there by air

Fournoi has no airport. The nearest airports are Samos and Ikaria, both with connections from Athens. Astypalaia has its own small airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Astypalaia to Athens and then Athens to Samos, followed by the local ferry to Fournoi, gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Astypalaia to Samos and then the local ferry across to Fournoi. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural connection given the geographic proximity of the islands in the eastern Aegean. If the timing does not align, fly from Astypalaia to Athens and then fly to Samos and take the local ferry across to Fournoi. Give yourself at least two nights on Fournoi and come prepared as facilities on the island are limited.
