Getting from Astypalaia to Patras

If you are heading to Patras from Astypalaia you are making your way from a butterfly-shaped island between the Cyclades and the Dodecanese to the third largest city in Greece on the southern shore of the Gulf of Corinth, the main gateway to the Ionian islands and western Europe.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Astypalaia to Patras. Getting there means taking the ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus, which runs around 5 times a week and takes around 8 to 12 hours, and then taking the KTEL bus or driving west to Patras, which takes around 2 to 2.5 hours from Athens via the E65 motorway. Alternatively fly from Astypalaia to Athens and then take the KTEL bus or drive to Patras.

Getting there by air

Patras has a small seasonal airport at Araxos, around 40 kilometres from the city, operating limited flights from May to October only. The most practical approach is to fly from Astypalaia to Athens and then take the KTEL bus or drive to Patras. Total journey time is around 5 to 6 hours. Astypalaia has its own small airport with connections from Athens.

Your best option

Fly from Astypalaia to Athens and take the KTEL bus to Patras. The bus from Athens Kifissos terminal runs frequently and takes around 2.5 to 3 hours. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Astypalaia to Piraeus and drive west to Patras via the E65 motorway.
