Getting from Athens to Koufonisia

If you are heading to Koufonisia from Athens you are going to the most sociable of the Small Cyclades and one of the most enjoyable small islands in Greece. Koufonisia is actually two islands, Ano Koufonisi and Kato Koufonisi, with almost all the life concentrated on the smaller Ano Koufonisi. The main village is a tight cluster of whitewashed houses around a harbour, the beaches on the south coast are some of the finest in the Cyclades and the island has a lively summer scene that punches well above its size. It draws a young, relaxed crowd who come for the beaches, the tavernas and the particular atmosphere of somewhere small enough to feel like a secret.

Take the ferry

The Piraeus to Koufonisia ferry runs several times a week year-round, taking around 6 to 8 hours depending on the vessel and the stops along the way. Most sailings pass through Naxos, making Naxos a useful connection point for those who want more flexibility. In summer the frequency increases and the fast catamaran service from Naxos to Koufonisia takes around 45 minutes. Book ahead in July and August as the island fills up fast and ferry spaces go quickly.

Getting there by air

Koufonisia has no airport. The nearest airport is Naxos, which has daily connections from Athens taking around 45 minutes. From Naxos the short ferry to Koufonisia takes around 45 minutes. Total travel time via Naxos is around 2 to 3 hours and is the fastest overall approach.

Your best option

Fly to Naxos and take the ferry across to Koufonisia. It is the fastest approach by a significant margin and the connection from Naxos is straightforward. If you are not in a hurry, the ferry from Piraeus is a good crossing through the heart of the Cyclades. Book ahead in summer as Koufonisia has very limited accommodation and everything fills up fast.
