Getting from Athens to Sifnos

If you are heading to Sifnos from Athens you are going to one of the most respected islands in the Cyclades. Sifnos has a reputation above all for its food, a tradition of pottery and cooking that has made it one of the most regarded gastronomic destinations in the Aegean. The capital Apollonia is a cluster of white villages on a ridge with views in both directions. The medieval castle of Kastro sits above the sea on the eastern coast with a warren of lanes and churches inside the walls. The beaches at Platis Gialos and Faros are excellent. Sifnos has a devoted following among Greeks and an increasingly international one among visitors who have worked their way past the obvious Cyclades.

Take the ferry

The Piraeus to Sifnos ferry runs year-round with up to several daily crossings in summer. The fastest service takes around 2 hours 50 minutes to 3 hours on the high-speed catamaran. Conventional ferries take around 4 to 5 hours. Most sailings stop at Serifos or Milos along the way. The ferry from Piraeus delivers you directly to the port of Kamares at the foot of the island with the hills rising steeply above the harbour. Book ahead in July and August.

Getting there by air

Sifnos has no airport. The ferry from Piraeus is the only realistic option from Athens and at under 3 hours on the fast service it is a manageable crossing.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Piraeus. The fast catamaran at around 3 hours is the right choice if you want to arrive quickly. The conventional overnight crossing is worth considering if you want to make the most of your time on the island. Check Ferryhopper for the day's schedule and book ahead in peak summer.
