Getting from Chania to Amorgos
If you are heading to Amorgos from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to the most eastern of the Cyclades, to the north. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Take the ferry
There is a seasonal direct ferry from Chania to Amorgos running in summer on the wider Blue Star route that connects Crete with the eastern Cyclades. The service runs a limited number of times per week and takes several hours with stops along the way. Alternatively take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and then the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours depending on the vessel. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation.
Getting there by air
Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 10 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the seasonal direct ferry from Chania to Amorgos when the schedule works for your dates. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most enjoyable approach. If the timing does not align, take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and board the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry from Piraeus takes your vehicle directly to the island.
