Getting from Chania to Kasos

If you are heading to Kasos from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to the southernmost island in the Dodecanese group, relatively close in geographic terms given that Kasos sits just northeast of eastern Crete. It has a maritime history that produced some of Greece's most celebrated sea captains and an authenticity that comes from being almost entirely off the tourist circuit.

Take the ferry

There is a seasonal direct ferry from Chania to Kasos running in summer on the wider Blue Star route that connects Crete with the southern Dodecanese. The service runs a limited number of times per week and takes several hours with stops along the way. Alternatively take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and then the Piraeus to Kasos ferry, which runs 3 to 5 times a week and takes around 13 to 17 hours. Flying via Rhodes is considerably more practical for most travelers.

Getting there by air

Kasos has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then Athens to Rhodes and Rhodes to Kasos gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Fly from Chania to Athens and then fly to Rhodes and connect to Kasos by air or local ferry. Check the schedule carefully as the Kasos service runs a limited number of times per week. If you prefer to travel by sea, check whether the seasonal direct ferry from Chania aligns with your dates as it avoids Athens entirely. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus and board the Piraeus to Kasos ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in around 13 to 17 hours.
