Getting from Chania to Kastellorizo
If you are heading to Kastellorizo from Chania you are making your way from the most intimate of Crete's three main cities to the easternmost point of Greece, a tiny island just off the Turkish coast in the Dodecanese with a harbour of neoclassical mansions, the extraordinary Blue Cave and an atmosphere of complete tranquility.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Chania to Kastellorizo. Getting there by sea means taking the overnight ferry from Chania to Piraeus, which takes around 8 to 9 hours, and then boarding the Piraeus to Kastellorizo ferry, which runs 6 times a week and takes around 20 to 22 hours stopping at multiple Dodecanese islands along the way. The total journey takes the better part of three days.
Getting there by air
Kastellorizo has its own small airport with connections from Athens via Rhodes. Chania has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Chania to Athens and then Athens to Rhodes and Rhodes to Kastellorizo gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Fly from Chania to Athens and then fly to Rhodes and connect to Kastellorizo by air or local ferry. It is the fastest and most practical approach by a significant margin. Give yourself at least two nights on Kastellorizo. The island is small enough to walk around in an afternoon and extraordinary enough to make you want to stay much longer.
