Getting from Chios to Amorgos
If you are heading to Amorgos from Chios you are making your way from one of the most overlooked islands in the northeastern Aegean to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of Greece. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Chios to Amorgos. Getting there by sea means taking the overnight Chios to Piraeus ferry, which runs around 3 times a week and takes around 9 hours, and then the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours depending on the vessel. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes.
Getting there by air
Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Chios has its own airport with daily connections from Athens. Flying from Chios to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry gives a total journey time of around 8 to 10 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Fly from Chios to Athens and take the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. It is the most practical approach. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, take the overnight ferry from Chios to Piraeus and board the conventional Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
