Getting from Dokos to Skyros

If you are heading to Skyros from Dokos you are making your way from an uninhabited rocky island in the Saronic Gulf to the most remote of the Sporades group, in the northern Aegean. It has two completely different landscapes, a dramatic hilltop Chora and a wild volcanic south, with its own native horse breed and one of the most extraordinary carnival traditions in Greece.

Take the ferry

There are no scheduled ferries from Dokos. Dokos has no ferry service and is accessible only by water taxi from Hydra, Spetses or Ermioni, with the crossing from Hydra taking around 30 minutes. Skyros is connected to the mainland only via Kymi on the eastern coast of Evia. Getting to Skyros means arranging a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, taking the Saronic ferry from Hydra to Piraeus, which takes around 1 hour 5 minutes to 2 hours, and then either flying to Skyros directly from Athens or driving to Kymi for the ferry across to Skyros, which takes around 1 hour 40 minutes.

Getting there by air

Skyros has its own small airport with connections from Athens, running around twice a week. Dokos has no airport. Taking the water taxi from Dokos to Hydra, the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and flying from Athens to Skyros gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours. Check the Athens to Skyros schedule carefully as the service runs a limited number of times per week. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Arrange a water taxi from Dokos to Hydra before leaving the island, take the Saronic ferry to Piraeus and fly from Athens to Skyros or drive to Kymi for the ferry. Pre-arrange your water taxi departure as you cannot hail a boat once you are on Dokos. Flying is the most time efficient approach for this connection.
