Getting from Elafonisos to Meteora
If you are heading to Meteora from Elafonisos you are making your way from a small island off the southern Peloponnese coast to one of the most extraordinary places in Greece, a complex of Byzantine monasteries built on top of rock pillars in the plain of Thessaly in central Greece.
Take the ferry
There is no ferry to Meteora. It is an inland destination with no sea connection. Elafonisos has no ferry connection to the wider Greek ferry network in any case. The only ferry from Elafonisos is the short 10 minute crossing to Pounta on the southern Peloponnese, which runs every 30 minutes in summer. Getting to Meteora means taking the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta and then driving north to Kalambaka, the town at the base of the Meteora rocks, which takes around 5 to 6 hours from Pounta via Tripoli and the E65 motorway.
Getting there by air
Meteora has no airport. The nearest town is Kalambaka, around 3.5 to 4 hours by road from Athens. Note that as of 2026 the direct train service between Athens and Kalambaka remains suspended due to track damage and the KTEL bus is currently the main public transport option. Elafonisos has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Taking the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta and driving north to Kalambaka gives a total journey time of around 5 to 6 hours and avoids Athens entirely.
Your best option
Take the ferry from Elafonisos to Pounta and drive north to Kalambaka via Tripoli and the E65 motorway. It avoids Athens entirely and is the most direct approach at around 5 to 6 hours from Pounta. Having a car is essential for this route as the KTEL bus connection from Pounta is slow and infrequent. Plan at least two nights in Kalambaka as the monasteries and viewpoints deserve more than a rushed visit.
