Getting from Santorini to Fournoi

If you are heading to Fournoi from Santorini you are going to one of the finest fishing island complexes in the Aegean and one of the least visited. Fournoi sits between Ikaria and Samos in the eastern Aegean, a cluster of small islands where the main settlement is a working fishing village with excellent seafood, quiet beaches and almost no tourist infrastructure. The waters around Fournoi are extraordinarily productive and the fish tavernas along the harbour are among the best in the eastern Aegean. It is the kind of place that rewards people who have already done the obvious islands and want something genuinely different.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Santorini to Fournoi. The island is connected primarily through Ikaria and Samos, with the crossing from Ikaria taking around 20 to 55 minutes and the crossing from Samos taking around 1 hour. Blue Star Ferries also runs a service from Piraeus to Fournoi three times a week, taking around 9 to 11 hours. Getting to Ikaria or Samos from Santorini means going through Athens first. The most practical approach is to fly to either island and take the short local ferry across to Fournoi.

What about flying?

Fournoi has no airport. The nearest airports are Ikaria and Samos, both of which have domestic connections from Athens. The journey from Santorini goes Santorini to Athens and then Athens to Ikaria or Samos, followed by the local ferry to Fournoi. Total travel time is around 5 to 6 hours. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Fly to Ikaria via Athens and take the short ferry across to Fournoi. The Ikaria to Fournoi crossing takes under an hour and runs daily in summer. Check the schedule on Ferryhopper before booking your flights and plan your Ikaria arrival around the afternoon departure.
