Getting from Santorini to Samos

Samos is one of the most beautiful and most underrated islands in the Aegean. It sits close to the Turkish coast in the northeastern Aegean, separated from the ancient city of Ephesus by just a few kilometres of water. The island is green and mountainous, with wine production that dates back to antiquity, a coastline of good beaches and a history that produced Pythagoras, Aristarchus and Epicurus. The UNESCO-listed Heraion, temple of the goddess Hera, is one of the most important ancient sanctuaries in Greece. The town of Vathy has a fine archaeological museum and a working port atmosphere that feels nothing like the Cyclades.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Santorini to Samos. An indirect connection exists via Blue Star Ferries through Naxos and Ikaria, with the total journey taking around 8 hours, but the indirect routing and limited frequency make flying the practical choice for most travellers.

What about flying?

Both Santorini and Samos have airports. The journey goes Santorini to Athens and then Athens to Samos, with Aegean Airlines and Sky Express both serving the Athens to Samos route. Total travel time is around 4 to 5 hours door to door. It is worth knowing that in Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights. Almost all island to island travel goes through Athens.

Your best option

Fly via Athens. It is the only realistic choice and the connection is easy. Samos has two ports and the airport sits between them, so check which part of the island you are heading to before arranging onward transport.
