Getting from Syros to Santorini
If you are heading to Santorini from Syros you are making your way from the capital of the Cyclades to the most iconic island in the same group, to the south. It has caldera views, volcanic beaches and the ancient Minoan site of Akrotiri preserved under volcanic ash.
Take the ferry
There is a direct ferry from Syros to Santorini running several times daily in summer, taking around 4 to 5 hours depending on the vessel. It keeps the journey entirely within the Cyclades and avoids Athens and Piraeus entirely. The service connects Syros southward through the central Cyclades via Paros and Naxos before reaching Santorini, making it a straightforward and enjoyable island hop through the heart of the island group.
Getting there by air
Santorini has an international airport with daily connections from Athens. Syros has a small domestic airport with limited connections from Athens. Taking the ferry from Syros to Piraeus and flying from Athens to Santorini gives a total journey time of around 4 to 5 hours but adds unnecessary complication for what is a natural direct ferry connection within the Cyclades. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Your best option
Take the direct ferry from Syros south through the Cyclades to Santorini. It keeps the journey entirely within the Cyclades and avoids Athens entirely. Check the schedules carefully before booking as connections vary by season. The arrival into the caldera by sea is one of the great island arrivals in Greece and well worth the journey time. If you are traveling with a car, the conventional ferry takes your vehicle directly to Athinios port.
