Getting from Thassos to Halkidiki

If you are heading to Halkidiki from Thassos you are making your way from the northernmost island in Greece to a three-pronged peninsula southeast of Thessaloniki, with Kassandra in the west for long sandy beaches, Sithonia in the middle for quieter waters and the monastic peninsula of Athos in the east, remarkably close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of the country.

Take the ferry

There is no ferry to Halkidiki. It is a mainland peninsula with no island ferry connections. Getting there means taking the ferry from Thassos to Kavala, which runs almost hourly in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and then driving west via the E90 motorway to Thessaloniki and continuing to Halkidiki, which takes around 3 to 3.5 hours from Kavala. This avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural northern Greece approach.

Getting there by air

Halkidiki has no airport. The nearest airport is Thessaloniki, around 60 to 90 kilometres from the various parts of the peninsula. Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala. Taking the ferry from Thassos to Kavala and driving west to Thessaloniki and then Halkidiki gives a total journey time of around 3 to 3.5 hours and avoids Athens entirely. Flying via Athens adds unnecessary time for this short northern Greece connection.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Thassos to Kavala and drive west via the E90 motorway to Thessaloniki and then continue to Halkidiki. At around 3 to 3.5 hours total it avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural and direct approach. Having a car is essential for getting around Halkidiki as public transport connections within the peninsula are limited. The combination of Thassos and Halkidiki in the same northern Greece trip is a natural one given their shared geography.
