Getting from Thassos to Oinousses

If you are heading to Oinousses from Thassos you are making your way from the northernmost island in Greece to a small cluster of islands just off the northeastern coast of Chios in the northeastern Aegean, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of the country. It has a naval tradition that produced a disproportionate share of Greece's great shipping dynasties and almost no tourist infrastructure.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Thassos to Oinousses. Oinousses is accessible only via Chios, with a daily local ferry from Chios main port taking around 1 hour. Getting there means taking the ferry from Thassos to Kavala, which runs almost hourly in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and then flying from Kavala to Athens and then Athens to Chios, followed by the local ferry across to Oinousses. Alternatively drive to Piraeus for the overnight Piraeus to Chios ferry and then take the local ferry to Oinousses.

Getting there by air

Oinousses has no airport. The nearest airport is Chios. Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala. Taking the ferry from Thassos to Kavala, flying from Kavala to Athens and then Athens to Chios, followed by the local ferry to Oinousses taking around 1 hour, gives a total journey time of around 6 to 7 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Thassos to Kavala and fly from Kavala to Athens, then fly from Athens to Chios and take the local ferry across to Oinousses. Check the daily ferry schedule from Chios before booking your flights and plan your Chios arrival around the afternoon departure. Give yourself at least two nights on Oinousses and bring everything you need with you. If you are traveling with a car, drive to Piraeus for the overnight Piraeus to Chios ferry, which takes your vehicle and arrives in the morning.
