Getting from Thassos to Volos

If you are heading to Volos from Thassos you are making your way from the northernmost island in Greece to a city on the Pagasetic Gulf at the foot of the Pelion peninsula in Thessaly, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of the country. It is the departure point for ferries to the Sporades and has a long waterfront lined with ouzo bars and seafood restaurants.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Thassos to Volos. Getting there means taking the ferry from Thassos to Kavala, which runs almost hourly in summer and takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, and then driving southwest via the E75 motorway and Thessaloniki to Volos, which takes around 2.5 hours from Kavala. This avoids Athens entirely and keeps the journey entirely within northern Greece at around 4 to 4.5 hours total.

Getting there by air

Volos has a small airport at Nea Anchialos, around 20 kilometres from the city, with limited connections from Athens. Thassos has no airport. The nearest airport is Kavala. The drive from Kavala to Volos is considerably more practical than flying for this connection given the direct road link through Thessaloniki.

Your best option

Take the ferry from Thassos to Kavala and drive southwest via the E75 motorway and Thessaloniki to Volos. At around 4 to 4.5 hours total it avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural northern Greece approach. The KTEL bus from Kavala to Volos via Thessaloniki is a good alternative if you are traveling without a car. From Volos you have direct ferry connections to Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos in the Sporades running daily in summer.
