Getting from Thessaloniki to Aegina
If you are heading to Aegina from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to the closest major island to Athens, in the Saronic Gulf. It has the best preserved ancient Greek temple in the country at Afaia, a thriving pistachio industry and a waterfront that fills up with Athenians every weekend.
Getting there by air
Aegina has no airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Thessaloniki has an international airport with daily connections to Athens. Flying from Thessaloniki to Athens and then taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina, which takes around 40 minutes on the fast boat and around 1 hour 20 minutes on the conventional ferry with over 40 daily departures in summer, gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Take the train, bus or drive
Thessaloniki is connected to Athens by train, taking around 4 to 5 hours, and by KTEL bus, taking around 5 to 6 hours. From Athens the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina runs over 40 times daily in summer. The drive from Thessaloniki to Piraeus takes around 5 to 6 hours via the E75 motorway.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Thessaloniki to Aegina. Getting there means traveling to Athens and then taking the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina.
Your best option
Fly from Thessaloniki to Athens and take the Saronic ferry from Piraeus to Aegina. With over 40 daily departures in summer you never need to book the Piraeus to Aegina connection in advance. It is the most practical approach at around 3 to 4 hours total. If you are traveling with a car, drive from Thessaloniki to Piraeus via the E75 motorway and board the conventional ferry across to Aegina.
