Getting from Thessaloniki to Meteora
If you are heading to Meteora from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to one of the most extraordinary places in the country, a complex of Byzantine monasteries built on top of rock pillars in the plain of Thessaly in central Greece, remarkably close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of Greece.
Getting there by air
Meteora has no airport. The nearest town is Kalambaka, around 2.5 hours by road from Thessaloniki. Flying is not a practical option for this short connection given the direct road link between the two. Note that as of 2026 the direct train service between Athens and Kalambaka remains suspended due to track damage and the KTEL bus is currently the main public transport option from Athens.
Take the train, bus or drive
Thessaloniki is connected to Kalambaka by road, taking around 2.5 to 3 hours via Trikala. The KTEL bus from Thessaloniki to Kalambaka runs several times daily and takes around 3 hours. This is the most natural and direct approach at around 2.5 to 3 hours and avoids Athens entirely. The drive across the Thessalian plain with the Meteora rocks appearing on the horizon as you approach Kalambaka is a memorable one.
Take the ferry
There is no ferry to Meteora. It is an inland destination with no sea connection.
Your best option
Drive or take the KTEL bus from Thessaloniki to Kalambaka via Trikala. At around 2.5 to 3 hours it avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural and direct approach. Plan at least two nights in Kalambaka as the monasteries and viewpoints deserve more than a rushed visit. The combination of Thessaloniki and Meteora in the same trip is one of the great northern Greece itineraries.
