Getting from Thessaloniki to Evia

If you are heading to Evia from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to the second largest island in Greece, connected to the mainland by road bridges and relatively close in geographic terms given both sit on the eastern side of Greece. It has varied landscapes from forested mountains in the north to sandy beaches in the south.

Getting there by air

Evia has no commercial airport. The nearest airport is Athens. Thessaloniki has an international airport with daily connections to Athens. Flying from Thessaloniki to Athens and then crossing to Evia via the bridge at Halkida, around 90 kilometres from central Athens, or taking the short ferry from Rafina to Marmari in southern Evia, which takes around 1 hour, gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours.

Take the train, bus or drive

Thessaloniki is connected to Halkida by road, taking around 4 to 4.5 hours via the E75 motorway and Lamia, and the bridge at Halkida connects directly to Evia. This avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural approach from Thessaloniki. The KTEL bus from Thessaloniki to Halkida runs several times daily. From northern Evia, cross from Arkitsa to Loutra Edipsou by short ferry, which takes around 30 minutes and is accessible from the Lamia road.

Take the ferry

There is no direct ferry from Thessaloniki to Evia. The most practical sea approach is the short ferry from Arkitsa to Loutra Edipsou in northern Evia, accessible after driving from Thessaloniki via Lamia.

Your best option

Drive from Thessaloniki to Halkida via the E75 motorway and Lamia, then cross the bridge directly into Evia. At around 4 to 4.5 hours it avoids Athens entirely and is the most natural and direct approach. If you are heading to northern Evia, drive to Arkitsa and take the short ferry to Loutra Edipsou. If you are traveling without a car, take the KTEL bus from Thessaloniki to Halkida and cross the bridge on foot.
