Getting from Thessaloniki to Oinousses
If you are heading to Oinousses from Thessaloniki you are making your way from the second largest city in Greece to a small cluster of islands just off the northeastern coast of Chios in the northeastern Aegean, relatively close in geographic terms given both sit in the northern part of the country. It has a naval tradition that produced a disproportionate share of Greece's great shipping dynasties and almost no tourist infrastructure.
Getting there by air
Oinousses has no airport. The nearest airport is Chios. Thessaloniki has an international airport with connections to Athens and seasonal direct flights to Chios in summer. Flying from Thessaloniki to Chios and then taking the local ferry to Oinousses, which takes around 1 hour and runs daily, gives a total journey time of around 3 to 4 hours when the direct service is running. Check the schedule as direct flights are seasonal. Alternatively fly from Thessaloniki to Athens and then Athens to Chios.
Take the train, bus or drive
Thessaloniki is connected to Athens by train, taking around 4 to 5 hours, and by KTEL bus, taking around 5 to 6 hours. From Athens the overnight Piraeus to Chios ferry runs around 3 times a week and takes around 9 hours, followed by the local ferry to Oinousses. Flying from Thessaloniki is considerably more practical than the combined train and ferry journey for most travelers.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Thessaloniki to Oinousses. Getting there by sea means traveling to Piraeus for the overnight ferry to Chios and then taking the local ferry to Oinousses.
Your best option
Fly from Thessaloniki to Chios when the direct seasonal service is running, then take the local ferry across to Oinousses. When direct flights are not available, fly from Thessaloniki to Athens and then Athens to Chios. Check the daily ferry schedule from Chios before booking your flights and plan your Chios arrival around the afternoon departure. Give yourself at least two nights on Oinousses and bring everything you need with you.
