Getting from Zakynthos to Amorgos
If you are heading to Amorgos from Zakynthos you are making your way from one of the most beautiful of the Ionian islands to the most eastern of the Cyclades, on the opposite side of Greece. It has dramatic cliffs, the extraordinary Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa built into the cliff face above the sea and an atmosphere that rewards those who make the effort to get there.
Getting there by air
Amorgos has no airport. The nearest airports are Naxos and Santorini. Zakynthos has an international airport with connections from Athens. Flying from Zakynthos to Athens and then taking the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which runs daily in summer and takes around 5 to 9 hours, gives a total journey time of around 8 to 12 hours. Amorgos has two ports, Katapola and Aegiali, so check which port your ferry arrives at before booking accommodation as the road between them takes around 30 minutes. In Greece, airlines do not operate direct inter island flights.
Take the ferry
There is no direct ferry from Zakynthos to Amorgos. No Ionian island is connected by sea to any Aegean island. Getting there by road means taking the ferry from Zakynthos to Kyllini and driving to Piraeus for the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. The total journey by road and sea takes the better part of two days.
Your best option
Fly from Zakynthos to Athens and take the Piraeus to Amorgos ferry. It is the most practical approach. Give Amorgos at least three nights. The island opens up slowly and rewards those who stay long enough to find its rhythm. If you are traveling with a car, take the ferry from Zakynthos to Kyllini and drive to Piraeus for the conventional Piraeus to Amorgos ferry, which takes your vehicle directly to the island.
