About Paola

Early Life

Paola, born Pagona Karamitsou on June 25, 1982, in Thessaloniki, grew up in Sykia, Halkidiki, in a household where both of her parents were musicians. She has an older brother, Pericles. At fourteen, she began singing at the suggestion of a local shopkeeper, with her parents' approval, and by nineteen she was already performing professionally in the Thessaloniki nightclub Mamounia.

Musical Style & Sound

Paola works primarily within modern Greek Laïko and pop, with a sound built for both radio airplay and live club performance. Her catalog favors emotionally direct, hook-driven singles, a style that has kept her consistently present on Greek radio charts across two decades. Her willingness to work across different producers and collaborators throughout her career has also given her sound range, from the sentimental duet style of her early work to the more contemporary pop production of her later albums.

Career Rise

Paola released her debut album, "Athoryva" (Silently), in 2005, then relocated to Athens to work with established artist Stamatis Gonidis. In 2007, her duet with Sotis Volanis, "Giagia kai Pappous" (Grandma and Grandpa), became a major hit and helped raise her national profile. She followed with "Perasame me Kokkino" in 2008, then "Gine Mazi Mou Ena" in 2012, which went gold. Her 2013 album "Meta ta Mesanyhta" (After Midnight) went platinum within three days of release, and her later album that year, "I Alitheia Mono," included "Hold On," which became the tenth biggest radio hit in Greece that year.

Diaspora Impact

Paola's steady run of platinum and gold releases, along with her consistent radio presence, has built her audience well beyond her original Thessaloniki base, drawing a following among Greek and Cypriot communities abroad who track contemporary Laïko-pop chart hits. Her accessible, hook-forward sound has made her one of the more consistently streamed and shared modern Greek pop artists among diaspora listeners who follow current Greek music rather than only legacy artists.

About

Paola (Paola Foka) is one of the most polarizing and magnetic figures in modern Greek music. Blending a raspy, powerful vocal style with a rock-star persona, she redefined the "female lead" in the Athenian nightlife scene. Known for her raw energy and refusal to conform to traditional pop standards, she has built a massive, loyal fanbase. In 2025, she returned to her roots with a series of traditional folk-infused tracks that surprised critics and topped the charts. As we move through 2026, Paola continues to be a dominant force in live entertainment, known for her ability to command a room with nothing but her voice and her authentic, unfiltered stage presence.

Diaspora Impact

Extremely popular in the diaspora nightlife scenes of Melbourne and Chicago, where her high-energy style is a major draw.
