Contracts are usually signed in summer, in quiet offices, far from the noise of a season. Como picked a Monday morning in late October, two days after Tasos Douvikas scored twice against Sassuolo. The Greek striker has signed a new contract with the Serie A club that runs through 2031, Como announced on its official site, and Football Italia, ANSA and Gazzetta all confirmed the news. His previous deal was due to expire in June 2029, so this adds two more years, according to Football Italia and Tuttosport.
For readers who do not follow Italian football closely, Como are the club from the lakeside city in Lombardy, coached by former Spain and Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas, and this is their first season in the Champions League. Douvikas joined from Celta Vigo in February 2025, per Football Italia, and he has turned into the focal point of the attack. Last week we covered his goal in the 4-1 Champions League win over Manchester United, and the story has only grown since then.
The numbers explain why Como moved early. According to the club statement, Douvikas has made 68 appearances for Como, with 27 goals and five assists in all competitions. Last season he scored 14 Serie A goals and finished as the second highest scorer in the league, the club said, and Football Italia added that only Lautaro Martinez, with 17, scored more. This season he already has eight goals in 11 games, five in Serie A and three in the Champions League, per Football Italia and ANSA.
The latest two came on Saturday at the Sinigaglia. Como beat Sassuolo 2-0, and Douvikas scored both goals early in the second half, as Eurosport and la Repubblica reported. In the 49th minute he finished a cross from Maxence Caqueret, and in the 60th minute he turned in a low cross from Kaiki, per Eurosport. He had already hit the crossbar in the 14th minute and forced a save soon after. Eurosport named him man of the match. Hard to argue with that.
It was not a smooth afternoon from the start. Both Eurosport and la Repubblica described a flat, even first half, followed by a decisive change from Fabregas at the break, when he made three substitutions at once. Eurosport's match sheet shows Ramon, Milla and Addai coming on at halftime. Within four minutes of the restart, Como were ahead. Good coaches change games at halftime. Good strikers are standing in the right place when the change starts to work.
The win was Como's third in a row in the space of a week, after victories over Fiorentina and Manchester United, Eurosport noted, and La Provincia di Como described both Como and their next opponent as being in excellent form. Eurosport added that Como are once again looking at the very top end of the table. For a club in its debut Champions League season, juggling league games and European nights, that kind of week is exactly what a coach hopes for.
Then there is the money, which is where contract news usually gets interesting. Gazzetta reported, citing Italian media, that the new deal is worth around three million euros a year, and AlphaNews put the jump at roughly 1.85 million euros a year on the old contract to about three million on the new one. Those figures come from reports, not from the club, so treat them as a guide. Either way, it is a clear raise, and a clear signal of how Como value him.
Douvikas sounded settled. "I'm very happy to continue my journey with Como; I've felt right at home from the very beginning and immediately sensed the club's ambition," he said in the club statement. "I've grown a lot since I arrived, thanks to Coach Fabregas and his staff, this group is like a big family to me. I want to keep helping the team by giving it my all." Gazzetta and SDNA both published the full statement in Greek on Monday.
Fabregas was just as warm. "From his very first day in Como, Tasos has demonstrated a strong mentality, and that has been reflected in his performances on the pitch," the coach said, per the club statement. "He is always positive, highly ambitious and has a fantastic work ethic. We are delighted to announce his contract extension." Football Italia ran the same quotes. Coaches say nice things about players all the time. Coaches who also sign off on a five-year commitment usually mean them.
Italian outlets framed it as Como locking down their main man. Tuttosport called him Fabregas's bomber and pointed out that his eight goals are double the tally of Nico Paz and Diao, the next best scorers at the club. ANSA summed it up as five more seasons together. In Greece, SDNA and AlphaNews both led with the word official, and Football Italia described him as a Greece international, which is worth remembering for anyone following the national team.
My take: this is a good deal for both sides, and the timing makes sense. Como protect a striker who is scoring in Serie A and in the Champions League, at a moment when his value is rising fast. Douvikas, at 27, gets security, a raise and a coach who clearly trusts him. The only risk is the usual one with long contracts signed in a hot streak. Form comes and goes. Still, 27 goals in 68 games is not a streak anymore. It is a pattern.
Next up, Como travel to face Torino in Serie A on Tuesday, October 27, at 20:45 Italian time (21:45 in Athens), per La Provincia di Como and Sky Sport. If Douvikas keeps this up, the ink on the new contract will barely be dry before he adds to his tally. For more on Greek athletes and clubs around the world, keep an eye on our Greek Sports section.
