The grown-ups had the big stage booked for the evening, but AEK's teenagers got to Manchester first and left with something to show for it. AEK's under-19 side drew 1-1 with Manchester City at the Joie Stadium on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, in the third round of the UEFA Youth League league phase, as Sport24 and Gazzetta reported. Dimitrios Sioutas scored after five minutes, Teddie Lamb answered three minutes later, and the young Greeks defended their way to a point, per FotMob's match data.

For readers new to it, the Youth League is UEFA's club competition for under-19 teams. AEK are in its Champions League Path because the senior side is in the Champions League league phase, and the youth teams follow the same first six opponents as the senior teams, with the same home and away venues, Sport24 explained. That is why the kids played in Manchester on the same day the first team faces City at the Etihad, a week on from the senior side's 3-1 loss to Shakhtar at Stamford Bridge.

AEK started on the front foot and were rewarded almost at once. Panagiotis Frantzeskakis won the ball with an aggressive press and sent in a cross, Argyris Argyriou headed it toward goal, and when the City goalkeeper pushed it out, Sioutas was there to finish from close range for 0-1, SDNA and Sport24 reported. It was the kind of goal coaches love, because it came from work rate as much as talent.

The lead lasted three minutes. In the eighth minute, Lamb ran onto a through ball from Dexter Oliver, got in behind the AEK defense and beat goalkeeper Vasilios Ioannou with a well-placed diagonal shot for 1-1, according to Sport24 and Gazzetta, with FotMob crediting Oliver with the assist. Fast start, fast reply. After that the game settled into the pattern everyone expected, with City holding the ball and AEK looking for a way out.

AEK nearly went back in front in the 11th minute, when Grigorios Golfinos went for goal but missed the target, per Gazzetta. Then City pushed. Finlay Gorman hit the crossbar with a direct free kick in the 16th minute, Sport24 reported, and Lamb fired a powerful shot wide a minute later, according to Gazzetta. The pace dropped after that, and the teams went in level at the break, as both outlets noted.

The second half followed the same script. City kept possession and tried to find gaps, but AEK defended with discipline, good positioning and real concentration, limiting the space for the English side, SDNA wrote. Coach Periklis Papapanagis replaced Sioutas with Stefanos Tsantilas at halftime, per Gazzetta and FotMob. City came close in the 64th minute, when Marlow Barrett headed an Oliver cross wide, Sport24 reported, while Argyriou answered for AEK with a shot from the edge of the box that went wide in the 73rd minute.

The late stretch belonged to Ioannou. In the 75th minute he held a powerful volley from Dante Headley, and a minute later he pushed away a long-range shot from Oliver, according to Sport24 and Gazzetta. Gazzetta called the young goalkeeper decisive in AEK leaving with a result, and it highlighted one more impressive save in the 92nd minute, when he stopped a cross-shot from Gorman to keep the score at 1-1 until the final whistle.

Papapanagis started Ioannou in goal behind a back line of Athanasios Rinnis, Athanasios Filippiadis, Stavros Psyropoulos and Panagiotis Tampakoglou, with Frantzeskakis and Milan Skakic in midfield and Golfinos, Anastasios Amanatidis, Sioutas and Argyriou further forward, per Gazzetta and FotMob. Sotirios Stergiaropoulos and Panagiotis Pontikis came on in the second half, and two more fresh legs arrived right at the end to see the result home, as Gazzetta and Sport24 both listed.

The point keeps AEK unbeaten in the competition. They opened with a 0-0 draw against LASK in Spata and then won 2-1 over Shakhtar in London, Sport24 recapped, so they now have five points from three games and sit 12th in the single 36-team table. Gazzetta added that the result stretched the team's unbeaten run to nine matches. City, by contrast, had lost both of their first two league phase games, according to Sport24, so they badly wanted this one.

The format makes every point count. After six rounds, the top 22 teams in the table reach the round of 32, while the clubs from 23rd to 36th are eliminated, Sport24 explained. Ten more teams join from the Domestic Champions Path, the clubs in places 1 to 6 face those in 17 to 22, and the teams from 7 to 16 meet the domestic champions. The draw is set for December 11, with the first knockout games on February 2 and 3, 2027, and the final on April 19, per Sport24.

AEK supporters made the trip count, too. Sport24 and SDNA both reported a strong turnout of AEK fans for the youth game, a few hours before the senior match, and SDNA reported that the young players were cheered by the crowd at the end. For a group of teenagers playing at one of the best academies in Europe, that kind of support matters. It also shows how much the club's Champions League campaign means to its people, a story that ties into Greece's recent rise in the UEFA ranking.

My take: this is a result worth more than one point. Drawing away at Manchester City at youth level is hard, and doing it after conceding so quickly is even harder. AEK did not panic, they kept their shape, and their goalkeeper delivered when it mattered most. Unbeaten after three games, with a win in London and a draw in Manchester, these players are proving they belong at this level. The challenge now is to turn good defending into a few more goals at home.

Next up is a glamorous home date. AEK host Real Madrid at the Serafeidio, the club's training center in Spata, on November 4 at noon, according to Sport24. Greek clubs have been busy on the European stage all autumn, from AEK to Greek players abroad such as Kostas Tsimikas captaining Liverpool. Keep an eye on our Greek Sports section for every result. One point in Manchester, and Madrid is coming to Spata.
