Ganja is a long way from Rhodes, and that is exactly the point. On Tuesday night Kolossos H Hotels beat Gence BC 80-62 at the Ganja Sports Palace in Azerbaijan in Round 2 of the FIBA Europe Cup, as Filathlos reported, for what Greek coverage is calling the club's first European away win in its history. Kolossos move to 2-0 in their group. Gence fall to 0-2. A first road win in Europe is the kind of line you remember in October.
For readers who mainly know the EuroLeague giants, Kolossos are the island club from Rhodes, playing in the FIBA Europe Cup rather than the EuroLeague or Champions League. That competition is where a lot of Greek basketball's depth shows up, and this season the islanders have already made a statement. If you are catching up on the wider European night for Greek clubs, our Greek Sports section has been busy with road wins across competitions. Rhodes itself is better known for beaches and the medieval Old Town than for basketball road trips to the Caucasus, but the "thalassoi" are writing a different chapter right now.
The first half was about control, not flash. Payton Willis opened the scoring, Gence briefly led 8-7, and Kolossos answered to close the first quarter 20-16, per SDNA. Early in the second, the hosts cut it to one point at 21-22, then Kolossos stepped on the gas. A late first-half push left them up 40-27 at the break, and their defense held Gence to just 11 points in that quarter. When you win the glass and lock down a quarter like that on the road, the night usually tilts your way.
The third quarter stretched the lead to 18 before Gence found a pulse. Jackson Kreuser and Ezra Manion pushed Kolossos out to 46-28, as to10.gr reported, but the hosts chipped away and closed the period at 46-58. Coach Aris Lykogiannis's side still looked a gear better, yet the gap was no longer comfortable. Away nights in Europe often turn on whether you can survive that kind of wobble without panicking.
Then came the scare. In the fourth, Jarvis Garrett and company ran an 11-2 stretch that cut the deficit to four at 58-62, according to Gazzetta. For a moment the Ganja crowd had something to believe in. Kolossos answered the only way that settles arguments: a 14-0 run featuring Georgios Kamperidis, Kreuser, Willis and Manion that made it 76-58 and ended the debate. Final score 80-62. Quarters: 16-20, 27-40, 46-58, 62-80.
Manion led the visitors with 19 points and seven rebounds in under 23 minutes. Kreuser added 17 points and nine rebounds, while Willis had 16 points and seven assists, per Sport24. Garrett topped Gence with 15. The rebound margin told the real story: Kolossos 52, Gence 39. When you own the glass by that much on the road, you can afford a cold stretch from three and still walk out with a comfortable win.
Greek sources are treating this as more than another group-stage box score. Filathlos framed it as the club's first European "diplo," the away win that had been missing from the Kolossos history book, and Dimokratiki of Rhodes stressed that the islanders imposed their rhythm after the early nerves and the late four-point scare. Lykogiannis's group sits 2-0 after Round 2. In a competition where every road game is a logistics story as much as a basketball one, that start matters for seeding and for confidence.
It was also a good night for the broader Greek European picture. While Kolossos were locking down Ganja, Peristeri were completing a 15-point comeback in Italy in the Champions League, and the EuroLeague clubs keep filling their own calendars. Depth is the quiet story of Greek basketball right now: not only the two giants, but clubs from Rhodes and the Athens suburbs picking up road wins in FIBA competitions. That is healthy for the whole pyramid, and it gives fans abroad something to follow beyond the usual two logos.
The shooting numbers were not pretty on either side, which makes the rebound edge even more important. Kolossos went 7 of 31 from three and still won by 18, while Gence managed only 2 of 15 from deep and 20 of 62 from the field overall, per Gazzetta's box score. Free throws flipped the other way: Gence took 30 of them to Kolossos's 15. Quality and the glass still decided it. Fair math.
The next test will be harder. Kolossos travel to Portugal next Wednesday, October 21, to face Sporting Lisbon, with tip-off listed at 19:00 local time, per Sport24. Going 2-0 is nice. Going 3-0 after a trip to Lisbon would be a statement that this Europe Cup run is serious. Gence, meanwhile, also play on the road next week, against Rilski Sportist in Bulgaria.
Here is my measured take: I like what Kolossos are building under Lykogiannis, and I like that they did not fold when Gence got within four. First European away wins are not supposed to look pretty for 40 minutes, and this one had a wobble. The rebound dominance and the 14-0 answer are the parts I would keep. If they can bring that same glass and late-game calm to Lisbon, this 2-0 start will look like more than a soft schedule story.
Next up is Sporting in Portugal on October 21. For that one, and for every other Greek club still grinding through Europe in October, keep an eye on our Greek Sports section. First diplo in the books. Now for the harder part.
