Defense finally looked like a Spanoulis defense, and then the scoreboard followed. Vassilis Spanoulis's Aris beat Maroussi 74-57 at Nick Galis Hall on Saturday in Round 3 of the Stoiximan Greek Basket League, as TA NEA reported, with Matt Morgan scoring 22 points in 20 minutes to lead the way. The quarters ran 15-13, 37-28, 60-43 and 74-57, per ERT Sports. Aris climb to 2-1. Maroussi drop to 0-3.

For anyone catching up, this was Aris's chance to put a shaky league start behind them. They opened the season with a home loss to Karditsa, then smashed AEK 88-58 at Nick Galis Hall and beat Derthona 88-68 in the EuroCup. Maroussi, coached by Ilias Papatheodorou, had already lost to AEK and Mykonos and came in still looking for a first win, Novasports noted. A packed house in Thessaloniki expected the yellow and black to take care of business.

The night started with a scare. Around the fifth minute, Vassilis Charalampopoulos went down holding his right leg and left for the locker room, as Novasports and ERT Sports both reported. Early estimates pointed to a calf strain, and he was taken for an MRI at the clinic the club works with. That is the kind of injury that can linger. Aris will wait on the scan before knowing how long he is out.

Once the hosts settled, the defense did the heavy lifting. Aris needed those first 15 minutes to play the way Spanoulis wants on that end, Novasports wrote, and after that the path got easier. Morgan, Vassilis Toliopoulos and company pushed the lead to nine by the 12th minute at 22-13, ERT Sports tracked, before Maroussi clawed back to 24-23. Back-to-back threes from Jeremiah Robinson-Earl and Morgan restored a six-point cushion, and Aris took a 37-28 lead into the break.

The third quarter decided it. Maroussi cut the gap to four at 38-34 early in the period, then Aris answered with a 13-6 burst to go up 51-40 by the 27th minute, ERT Sports recorded. The lead stretched to 22 points at 65-43 in the fourth, and TA NEA had the margin as high as 67-45. Maroussi never found a second gear. Holding an opponent under 60 points is the kind of night Spanoulis will take every time.

Morgan was the clearest difference maker. He finished with 22 points on 4 of 9 from three in just 20 minutes, per ERT Sports, nearly a third of Aris's total, Novasports noted. Neno Dimitrijevic added 14 points, three rebounds and four assists, and Kem Birch had 10 points and three rebounds, according to Novasports and TA NEA. When Aris needed a bucket to stretch the lead, Morgan usually had the ball.

For Maroussi, Jordan Walker scored 18 and Silvio De Souza posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, ERT Sports reported. That was about all the visitors could muster. They finished with 57 points and remain winless through three games. Surviving last season on a four-point tiebreaker over Panionios is one thing. Looking this blunt early in a new campaign is another.

Zoom out and this October is starting to look coherent for Aris. Three straight wins across competitions after the Karditsa stumble, a loud Nick Galis Hall, and a guard in Morgan who is carrying the offense night after night. The EuroCup side of the ledger is still perfect at 3-0 after the Derthona win. The league record is now a respectable 2-1. For a roster still learning Spanoulis's habits, that is real progress in a crowded Greek Basket League race.

The injury note will hang over the win. Charalampopoulos is a Greek international forward who gives Spanoulis size and experience on the wing. Losing him for any stretch changes the rotation, especially with Lefteris Bohoridis already recovering from appendicitis and missing recent games, as SDNA reported before this matchup. Depth is fine until it is not. Aris will hope the MRI brings better news than the first look suggested.

NewsIt framed the night as Aris stepping on the gas with Morgan in charge, and that is fair. The first half was competitive enough. The second half was a statement. Spanoulis's side outscored Maroussi 37-29 after the break and never let the visitors rebuild any rhythm on offense. That is how you turn a useful league win into something that sticks.

My take: the scoreline flatters a bit if you only watched the first half, but the third-quarter surge is exactly what this team has been missing in the league. Defense first, Morgan with the ball, the crowd loud. That is a formula that works in Thessaloniki. Maroussi are a measuring stick early in the season, not a finished product, and Aris treated them like one. Keep doing that against better sides and the standings will take care of themselves.

Next up for Aris in Europe is the trip to Germany to face Rostock Seawolves on Tuesday, October 20, at 21:00 Greek time, per the club's EuroCup schedule. In the Stoiximan GBL, the big clubs play Sunday, with Panathinaikos hosting Peristeri and Olympiacos visiting Ioannina, ERT Sports listed.
