Switzerland is a long way from the Cyclades, and that is part of the charm. On Tuesday night Mykonos Betsson beat Fribourg Olympic 80-65 at Salle Saint-Leonard in Round 2 of the FIBA Europe Cup, as to10.gr reported, moving to 2-0 in Group H and staying top of the table. Tyree Appleby scored 16, Jermaine Love added 14, and Elijah Childs posted a 13-point, 12-rebound double-double. A road win built on second-half defense is the kind of line that settles early European nights.
For readers who mainly know Olympiacos and Panathinaikos, Mykonos are the island club from the Cyclades, playing in the FIBA Europe Cup rather than the EuroLeague. That is where a lot of Greek basketball's depth shows up this autumn, and the "Nisiotes" already made a statement by beating Neftci before this trip. If you are catching up on the wider European night for Greek clubs, our Greek Sports section has been busy with road wins across competitions. Mykonos is better known for windmills and summer crowds than for October glass battles in Fribourg, but this squad is writing a different chapter right now.
Fribourg started hotter. Brown helped the hosts jump out to 12-3, and for a few minutes the Swiss side looked ready to run the Cycladic visitors off the floor, per Gazzetta. Dionysis Skoulidas answered with a three that flipped the score to 15-18, and Mykonos closed the first quarter down just one at 19-18. Early road deficits are normal in this competition. What matters is whether you keep your shape when the gym is loud and the first punch lands.
The second quarter tightened into a tug of war. Fribourg pushed ahead again mid-period, led by Mbala, and briefly sat on a 35-28 edge. Vangelis Ziagos's side did not panic. Love cut it to 37-35, and Childs finished the half with Mykonos in front 40-37, according to Ta Nea. Going into the locker room up three on the road after surviving a double-digit early hole is the kind of half that coaches like, even when the shot chart is still messy.
Fribourg took the lead again in the third, 50-47 around the 25-minute mark, and put real pressure on Ziagos's rotation. Mykonos found answers again through Childs and company, reclaiming the edge at 50-53 and carrying a 56-52 lead into the fourth, as Gazzetta reported. The game was still within a couple of possessions. That is when European road trips usually decide whether you are a serious group team or just a nice story.
The fourth belonged to the visitors. Mykonos locked in on defense, allowed only 13 points in the period, and stretched the margin as Funderburk helped push the lead to seven at 58-65 with about four minutes left. From there the islanders kept pulling away to 80-65. Quarters: 19-18, 37-40, 52-56, 65-80. The rebound board told the night's real story: Mykonos 42, Fribourg 24, per Gazzetta's box score. When you own the glass by 18 on the road, you can survive a slow start and still walk out with a double-digit win.
Appleby finished with 16 points, six assists and four steals in just under 31 minutes, per ERT Sports and the Gazzetta box. Love added 14 points and five assists. Childs had the double-double. DJ Funderburk scored 12, Filippos Tigkas added 10 with two threes, and Skoulidas hit three triples for nine points, as to10.gr noted. Mbala led Fribourg with 21, but the hosts shot themselves out of the game on the glass and in the closing stretch. Fair math.
It was also a good night for the broader Greek Europe Cup picture. While Mykonos were locking down Fribourg, Kolossos Rhodes were beating Gence 80-62 in Azerbaijan to sit 2-0 in their own group, and Peristeri were completing a Champions League comeback in Italy. Depth is the quiet story of Greek basketball right now: not only the two EuroLeague giants, but clubs from Rhodes, the Athens suburbs and the Cyclades picking up road wins in FIBA competitions. That is healthy for the whole pyramid.
Greek coverage framed the result as more than a routine group-stage box score. Ta Nea stressed that Mykonos showed character after trailing early and that the defense decided the last ten minutes. Gazzetta called Ziagos's group impressive in Switzerland and noted the rebound margin as the decisive edge. Going 2-0 after a home win over Neftci and a road win in Fribourg is exactly the start you want when the schedule starts stacking home and away dates.
Next up, Mykonos host Lokomotiv Plovdiv on Tuesday, October 20, in the FIBA Europe Cup, with another European date following later in the month. Going 2-0 is nice. Going 3-0 after a home group game would turn this start into a real statement. Fribourg, meanwhile, will look to reset after dropping to 0-2 and watching a 12-3 opening lead evaporate.
Here is my measured take: I like how Mykonos absorbed the early punch and then won the night on the glass. Road wins in this competition are rarely pretty for 40 minutes, and this one had a 12-3 hole and a third-quarter wobble. The fourth-quarter defense and the 42-24 rebound edge are the parts I would keep. If they bring that same calm to the Plovdiv game at home, this 2-0 start will look like more than a soft schedule story.
Next up is Lokomotiv Plovdiv at home on October 20. For that one, and for every other Greek club still grinding through Europe in October, keep an eye on our Greek Sports section. Two wins from two. Now for the harder part.
