About the Beach
Katsouni Beach is the longest and most expansive coastal stretch on the island of Nisyros, located on the northern coast between the villages of Mandraki and Palloi. It features a diverse shore of dark volcanic sand, small pebbles, and large stones with exceptionally clear, deep blue water that reflects the dramatic geology of the Aegean volcano. The beach is entirely unorganized and maintains a raw, majestic character, surrounded by high reddish cliffs and wild Mediterranean vegetation that provide a sense of total freedom and privacy. It is a destination for nature lovers and adventurers who want to experience the island in its most natural form away from the busier port areas. The water is deep and fresh, offering a powerful swimming experience in a rugged and secluded setting where the marine life is abundant. There are no commercial facilities or trees for natural shade along most of the stretch, so you must be prepared with all your own water and supplies for the visit. Access is via the coastal road, and there are several paths leading down to the water. The entry into the sea is via the stones and the depth increases at a moderate pace. The atmosphere is quiet and reflects the untamed nature of the coast.
