About the Beach
Nea Chora Beach is the most accessible and popular urban coastal area located just one kilometer west of the Chania city center and the Venetian Walls featuring a landscape of fine golden sand and very shallow waters that are protected by a line of natural rocks situated two hundred meters from the shore in a well-organized environment that is famous for its authentic maritime atmosphere and a long pedestrian promenade lined with contemporary fish tavernas that serve the daily catch from the local fishing harbor where the surrounding geography is characterized by its proximity to the citys old industrial soap factories and its historical role as the first neighborhood built outside the Byzantine walls providing a convenient and social escape for both local residents and travelers who enjoy the annual Sardine Festival in early September.
