Eurybia: Greek Goddess of Mastery Over the Sea

The Story of Eurybia

Eurybia was a sea goddess with mastery over the sea and the forces of wind and weather. She was a daughter of Pontus, the sea, and Gaia, the earth. Hesiod describes her as having a heart of flint inside her.

Eurybia married the Titan Crius, and they had three sons: Astraeus, Pallas and Perses. Through them she became the grandmother of many important gods. Astraeus fathered the winds and the stars with Eos, Pallas fathered Nike, Kratos, Bia and Zelus with Styx, and Perses was the father of Hecate.

No myths of Eurybia's own deeds have survived, and she had no known worship. Her importance lies in her place in the family tree of the gods, linking the ancient sea to the powers of wind, victory and strength. Her name, meaning wide strength, suits a goddess whose descendants shaped so much of the world.
